On 22 June 2026, the Five Eyes intelligence alliance — the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand — issued a rare joint statement warning that AI-capable cyberattacks able to overwhelm government and business defences are close and urged leaders to strengthen their defences without delay.

• The timeline has collapsed. The agencies said the shift in offensive and defensive cyber capability is now measured in months, not years.
• Mid-sized businesses are the most exposed. Large corporates that have already invested in cybersecurity are better placed to cope. Companies that haven’t are the ones the warning is really aimed at.
• AI cuts both ways. The same statement notes that organisations building AI into their own security operations detect vulnerabilities earlier and respond to incidents faster.
• The recommended response is concrete. Invest in cyber defences, patch or upgrade outdated systems, and limit access to critical systems, starting now rather than after an incident.
